Move More

Currently 64% of the U.S. population is overweight and 35% are considered obese. The scary part is that these numbers go up every year with no end in sight. Consider the following problems that being overweight are responsible for:
  • Obesity is a chronic disease with a strong familial component.
  • Obesity increases the risk of developing health related risks like high blood pressure, diabetes (type 2), heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease and cancer of the breast, prostate and colon.
Physical inactivity exacts an enormous public health toll. Lack of physical activity is thought to be a primary factor in more than 200,000 deaths per year in the United States (1), a total equivalent to 25% of all chronic disease deaths and 10% of all deaths. Thus, for the US population, in which 29% of adults are sedentary and more than 50% are overweight (2), becoming moderately active can provide a meaningful health benefit.

If the preceding information has not motivated you to get off the couch I do not know what will. I think too many people put on blinders for 5-20 years and suddenly wake up and realize they have not seen there toes in a few years. They don’t think any of the health issues will happen to them. I can’t tell you the number of people I have worked with over the years that come to me asking me to help ONLY because they finally had a heart attack. It is a sad predicament we have gotten our selves into BUT there is a solution to the problem. Unfortunately, it’s most likely not what you want to hear, MOVE MORE!

You don’t have to belong to a health club to get in shape. Take a walk or go for a bike ride. You don’t have time you say, I challenge you to count the number of hours you watch T.V. per day. To busy with the kids, do you sit in your car while they are at practice? I promise you that you could find 20 minutes per day to expend more energy. Instead of sitting on a chair at your desk sit on a stability ball. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. And the next time you’re going shopping don’t look for the closest spot; park way out so you can get some extra steps in. If you have tried to get moving before but never get started, you may need a coach. Coaches provide a sense of accountability. Everyone works harder and does better when someone is watching and evaluating them. If you feel this may be you contact a Florida Fitness Coach today!

Your call to action this month is to commit to moving at least 20 minutes everyday! Combine that with the previous information on nutrition and not only will you lose weight but you will move further away from those dreaded health concerns that are sucking our health care system dry!

Until next time MOVE MORE and EAT LESS!
