Nutrition for Weight Loss, Part Ii
By Damon Moschetto

Last month, I began Part One of this article discussing carbohydrates and the myths and truths surrounding our body’s major source of energy. This month we will continue on with our discussion of macronutrients. Protein is the major material that our body uses for making muscle tissue, connective tissue, organs, hair, nails, etc. 1 gram of protein yields 4 calories. There are complete proteins and incomplete proteins. A complete protein is made up of 22 Amino Acids, where as an incomplete protein is lacking at least one Amino Acid. An example of a complete protein is chicken, steak or eggs. Animal protein is always complete where as certain vegetables are lacking some Amino Acids, for example the combination of rice and beans are a complete protein, ingested separately they are incomplete. Consumption of protein is not a problem for most people, some vegetarians have a challenge getting enough protein but for the most part, most people get enough if not too much.

1 gram of fat yields 9 calories. Fat has several tasks that are vital to the functioning of the body. Fat is the precursor to the production of hormones, it protects the organs and is an abundant source of energy. As with carbohydrates, there are good fats and bad fats. They are broken down into 3 categories, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated. For our purposes, to keep it simple monounsaturated and polyunsaturated are the “good” fats, saturated fats are the ones to steer away from. An example of good fats would be roasted peanuts which are high in fat (calories as well) and butter is an example of a saturated fat. Even with good fats it is important to remember that they can be high in calories, which brings me to my next topic…

Now that you have a basic understanding of nutrition, let’s take this information and relate it to the topic most of us are concerned with, weight loss. Even today with 64% of the population overweight, nearly 40% obese, people still refuse to hear the truth about weight loss. I have great news! I not only saved a bunch of money on my car insurance but I have the magic weight loss formula for you! I guarantee success! Are you ready? Are you fired up? Here is your call to action:

MOVE MORE EAT LESS!!!!
